A safe place to receive care that can’t wait

We are committed to the safety of every patient, visitor and caregiver. Our emergency rooms continue to be safe and available for all patients seeking medical attention for urgent health concerns, whether COVID-19 related or not.

Advanced protocols to protect you

We have been and will continue to be proactively engaged in the safe management of COVID-19. As part of our larger network, HCA Healthcare, we have put in place infection prevention protocols and safety measures that help protect our patients and colleagues at all of our facilities. One of the many ways we are doing this is by providing masks to anyone entering our hospital or emergency room. For more information visit our COVID-19 Resource Hub.

Emergency rooms in Greater Kansas City

When an unexpected, severe injury or illness occurs, you need high-quality care fast. With eleven emergency rooms (ERs) in our network, HCA Midwest Health is here for you when an emergency situation arises. Our hospital and freestanding ERs provide 24/7 emergency care to patients of all ages with locations throughout Kansas City and its surrounding communities. With short wait times, we treat more emergencies than any network in the region.

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.

Advanced emergency medical care

In addition to being a regional leader in emergency care, HCA Midwest Health facilities make up region's largest group of trauma centers and ERs. Our extensive network makes us the smart choice for ER care.

Emergency services throughout our network include:

  • 10 ER locations with kid-friendly services and one dedicated pediatric ER at Overland Park Regional Medical Center
  • Three of our locations are freestanding ERs, which provide even more access to emergency care across Kansas City
  • ERs staffed by board-certified physicians, nurses and clinical staff certified in emergency medicine and emergency nursing
  • Five hospitals recognized by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) as Accredited Chest Pain Centers—demonstrating our expertise in emergency heart attack treatment
  • Follow-up care after an ER visit to ensure a successful recovery by connecting patients with the care they need, including free follow-up appointments for certain conditions
  • Four Verified Trauma Centers recognized by the American College of Surgeons with trauma specialists on-site 24/7
  • Missouri-based hospitals are part of the state's Time Critical Diagnosis (TCD) System, which coordinates area ambulances, hospitals and the 911 system to respond to time-crucial emergencies, including stroke and heart attack.
  • Nationally certified stroke services at five hospital locations
  • Obstetrics (OB) trauma services at Overland Park Regional Medical Center
  • On-site imaging services and laboratory testing at all ER locations
  • The only area health system with a patented program used to scan tests already being performed during your ER visit to screen for other conditions that may put you at risk for another future emergency.
  • Two OB ERs at OPRMC and RMC staffed by obstetrician-gynecologists (OB/GYNs) who care for patients with high-risk pregnancies, multiple pregnancies and unexpectedly early deliveries

Accredited Chest Pain Centers

The cardiac specialists at our five Accredited Chest Pain Centers provide coordinated, timely care for patients coming to one of our ERs with heart attack symptoms. We have board-certified cardiologists, perform the latest procedures and use advanced technology to treat heart attacks and connect patients to cardiac rehabilitation for recovery. We often use minimally invasive techniques to clear artery blockages causing a heart attack, which offers patients faster recovery times and less scarring, when compared to traditional heart surgery.

Fast emergency stroke treatment

Immediate stroke treatment is essential, because the more time gone without treatment, the longer the brain is deprived of crucial blood flow and oxygen. HCA Midwest Health is known for our excellence in stroke care, with many facilities receiving stroke center certifications. Our ER team work with imaging specialists and neurologists 24/7 to quickly diagnose a stroke and deliver timely treatment to restore blood flow to the brain.

Six hospitals in our network are recognized stroke centers certified by The Joint Commission in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Five of those stroke centers are also state-designated.

Pediatric emergency care

The emergency physicians in our ERs are experienced in caring for children when a severe injury or illness occurs. We offer 10 kid-friendly ERs and one dedicated pediatric ER at Overland Park Regional Medical Center (OPRMC).

If a child coming to the ER requires specialized care, we can easily transfer patients to other facilities within our hospital network following emergency treatment. OPRMC is home to Johnson County's only pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) where children receive critical care from a team of pediatric specialists.

Our freestanding ERs

In addition to the ERs located in our hospitals, we also have three freestanding emergency rooms (FSERs) located in Brookside, Olathe and Shawnee. Our FSER locations provide patients with greater access to emergency care whenever a sudden injury or illness occurs.

Our FSERs are staffed by the same emergency medicine physicians as our hospital ERS, with the same experience treating critical injuries and illnesses. FSERs offer the same services and specialized equipment as traditional ERs. If a higher level of care, such as an inpatient hospital stay, is required, we can easily transport patients from a FSER to one of our full-service hospitals.

Know where to go in an emergency

ERs treat different kinds of conditions than trauma centers and urgent care clinics. Knowing where to go to receive care in an emergency helps you gain access to the high-level treatment you need, when you need it.

ERs treat serious illnesses and injuries, such as:

  • Changes in mental status and confusion
  • Chest pain and pressure
  • Deep wounds
  • Dehydration
  • Difficulty breathing and shortness of breath
  • Head injuries and concussions
  • High fevers
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Sudden dizziness, weakness and changes in vision
  • Sudden or severe pain
  • Suspected poisoning or drug/alcohol overdoses
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Uncontrolled diarrhea
  • Uncontrolled nausea or vomiting

Trauma centers, located within a traditional ER, treat life-threatening traumatic injuries, such as:

  • Back and neck fractures
  • Brain and spinal cord injuries
  • Cuts and puncture wounds
  • Open broken bones and fractures
  • Severe acute burns

Urgent care clinics treat non-emergency illnesses or injuries that require medical attention. You can receive treatment for issues, such as:

  • Cuts that may need stitches
  • Minor allergic reactions
  • Minor burns
  • Minor infections
  • Possible broken bones or simple fractures
  • Sprains or strains
  • Strep throat

Walk-in clinics treat non-serious injuries and illnesses, such as:

  • Flu
  • Sinus infection
  • Strep throat

Doctor's offices can provide care for patients in need of:

  • Annual physical exams
  • Treatment for chronic conditions
  • Well care

Missouri's new emergency medical care response system

Missouri's new statewide emergency medical care response system is designed to help improve the level of care and efficiency when a time-critical emergency occurs, like a stroke or heart attack. We have specifically-trained staff available 24/7 to treat time-sensitive medical emergencies at four of our hospital ERs, including:

  • Belton Regional Medical Center
  • Centerpoint Medical Center
  • Lee's Summit Medical Center
  • Research Medical Center

ER care that helps prevent future emergencies

Our family of hospitals is always looking for ways to keep patients healthy. That's why we created Care Connect, which uses a patient's ER visit to evaluate for and prevent future medical problems. We've found patients who use our service extend and enhance their lives. Care Connect can:

  • Connect patients to the right care at the right time
  • Help keep patients and loved ones out of the ER
  • Make healthcare easier to navigate

Check our ER wait times

Receiving prompt care can make all the difference in an emergency. That's why we broadcast our average ER wait times as part of our commitment to the Kansas City community.
